Emily Campbell graduated with a First Class BA Honours in Fine Art from Camberwell School of Art, before completing an MA in Alternative Media at Chelsea School of Art. Having completed numerous Public Art Projects throughout the UK, Emily Cambell set up Blue Butterfly Flooring in 2009. BBF works closely with clients to create bespoke Vinyl Floors that dramatically transform spaces.
Emily Campbell says
“I come from a Fine Art background www.emilycampbell.co.uk and have always had a fascination with flooring, seeing the ground as a normally underused space for art. The floor in a room can dramatically shift the dynamic of a space by either creating drama, or a sense of tranquility. We are more used to floors being solid surfaces, such as wood, carpet, ceramic etc. – my designs are about creating illusions, telling stories and transforming spaces. Whilst once upon a time we would walk down the corridor to get to the bathroom, now we can jump over waves and count the fish to reach our destination. Our experience on entering a room can emulate that of a picnic on a hot summers day or a deep-sea dive in tropical oceans.
My process involves taking hundreds of photographs, all of which are taken from above. This means you really get the sense you are standing in an actual landscape. Every floor is completely unique and I thoroughly enjoy new challenges set by clients, especially when there is an existing floor surface or interior design concept that needs to be incorporated. I see the design process as very much a 2-way conversation, with ideas and designs thrown back and forth until the client is happy.
The use of photography makes the designs seem very real, but at the same time they are completely imaginary. I play a lot with scale in the designs, our eyes seem to notice things of a similar scale, so initially ones focus of attention may be on the rabbits, badgers, foxes etc. on a return visit or closer inspection we start to notice all the insects and other details.”
